Information about ARGville.com: Our purpose, how we came to be, why the name....

Site Purpose

Mission Statement: To maintain a weblog community that is powered by volunteers willing to share their real world experiences and knowledge to help others cope with real world issues.

Volunteers are encouraged to join the community and share their experiences by giving no-nonsense advice and contributing articles on topics as outlined in each blog.

Joining the community as a volunteer simply means visiting the site often and doing any of the following: posting Visitor Comments (under each posting), using the Submit Forms to submit material, joining and participating in the Forums, or even moderating a site blog.

How the site works

Blog Moderators (BMs) are responsible for updating the blogs. In some cases a BM supplies much of the material posted. In other cases the visitors do. But in all cases everyone has a chance to participate by submitting material, making comments under each post, or participating in the ARGville Forum.

Intended Audience

The site is intended for everyone. But due to occasional mature themes and language we recommend this site for those 18 or over. However, mature teens who can handle spicy language are encouraged to participate.

We also aim to cater to those who are fed up with excessive netspeak and overuse of slang. While our literary requirements are relaxed, we do expect material published here to be clear and well-written.

How you can join the staff?

If you're interested in being a Blog Moderator, either for an existent blog or if you have a new idea that fits with the theme of the site, submit an application. We'll review the application and follow up with you (make sure to provide a valid email address).

Keep in mind that ARGville.com is a volunteer effort. There's no money involved (the Google Ads you see are an attempt to help pay for webhosting and marketing costs.)

What's with the name?

ARG stands for A Real Guy/Girl. The "ville" part was added for several reasons:

  • "ville" is symbolic of a small, cozy kind of place, and we wanted the site to be a community that visitors can feel they belong to.

  • Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who takes place in Whoville. Not only is the association a pleasant one from our childhood but the message that every person counts, no matter how small, is one we hope to live by on this community.

  • Jimmy Buffet's song Margaritaville conveys both happy times and the search for "how did I get here and who's to blame". We like these associations as well.

Well, the three points listed above just justified why we kept the name. In truth, the original idea for the name came from visiting a forum. One poster said something like: "I hit my head on the kitchen cabinet! Ouch! ARGVILLE!" We saw the term and liked it.

Our official "date of birth":
