Bend it like you-know-who
By VictorM:I have often argued that soccer won't make it as one of the major sports in this country until it becomes part of the culture and it seeps into every day language, the way phrases like "Monday morning quarterback", "three strikes and you're out", "right off the bat", etc. have. While soccer has a long way to go, we have seen the beginnings of such an impact with the expression "soccer mom." There is another term that seems to have been creeping its way into American lexicon. Here's an example of it from a front pager at DailyKos, referring to Barack Obama saying one thing about the FISA bill but doing another:
so kudos for bending the language like Beckham, but that's not really what most people would consider that phrase to meanBend it like Beckham. It's here to stay... for a while, anyway.
