Intellectually incoherent
By Atrios:I don't know if Bush stays in Iraq simply because he's stubborn, doesn't like when Poppy's pals, otherwise known as the Iraq Study Group, try to tell him what to do, and equates leaving with losing, or if he really is invested in a long term military occupation of a Middle East client state. It doesn't much matter, really, the guy is a simpleton and whatever reasons he has are probably intellectually incoherent.

The reason why Bush's policies (are seeming lack thereof) seem incoherent is because we don't understand what his Administration's motivation and goals are. The one mistake we can make is to assume he or his minions are idiots. They are not. But they are not interested in governing. So that's why their actions make no sense to us, the people who believe that government should, you know, govern.
George Lakoff's writing will back me up on this. The Bush Administration has accomplished quite a lot of their goals with the shell game of war. Look over there! Kaboom! Meanwhile, what's the other hand been doing? Eroding our civil liberties and increasing the power of the executive and weakening existing laws for the environment and etc etc. Oh, and making all his corporate friends rich.

Well said, Rose. If they were just idiots they would be slightly less dangerous.
More directly than the distraction factor at home there's the sweetheart deal for U.S. oil giants and guaranteed access to the world's second-largest untapped oil reserves. Plus, if Bush and Cheney can get away with it by handing their plans off to John McCain, there's a perfect platform for launching future military attacks against other Mideast countries.
All the more reason to prevent a handoff.
