Avoiding TV

tvBy VictorM:

Right after George Bush was awarded the presidency by the US Supreme Court in 2000, I decided to give up all television watching, except for soccer games. No more Firing Line, no more Hardball, no Survivor or American Idol, no more annoying commercials selling crap, no Brady Bunch, and no Father Knows Best. Nothing! And my life has been much better for it. Last night I got a reminder why my decision was a good one.

I stopped in for dinner at the concierge lounge at the hotel I'm staying and they were showing Larry King Live. I ate as fast as I could to get out of there, but not before I saw an interview with Ronald Reagan's son about his mother, Nancy Reagan's fall. The woman is 86 years old. She fell. She's OK. What's the big story there? But then came the promo for the next segment... dramatic look on Larry King's face... Obama... Hillary... and "The War of the Words"... dramatic music.... cut to commercial.

Are there any political shows that actual inform and educate? It seems they are all about poking someone in the eye and getting a bunch of paid pundits to throw as much lemon juice on every paper cut.

I'll stick to watching only soccer. No commercials during the run of play. And hey, Goldenballs* will be on TV (ESPN Classic) tomorrow night.

*Goldenballs is David Beckham's nickname.

Comments:
Inform and educate? That's not what the teevee is for! ;P

I watch 4 shows, all recorded on DVR so I can FF through the commercials and watch things when I have or make the time:

House MD
Battlestar Galactica
The Closer
Everybody Hates Chris

So that's: one crabby/sexy doctor show, one scifi/sexy show, one Southern/sexy cop in LA show, and...a sitcom with voiceover by Chris Rock.

Oh! And when the series starts up again? Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days on F/X. Great stuff.

I watch TV, although very little pure entertainment programming. Most of my viewing is background while doing other things and consists of news — or what passes for it these days — news/talk shows, some COPS- and "Flip This House"-type reality shows and, of course, C-SPAN.

Now and then, if I'm in the mood, I'll watch "Reno 911."

I can certainly understand your decision to avoid nearly all TV, though. As the number of channels and commercials have increased (along with their excessive volume and annoying white-noise-background techniques), the quality and originality of programming has steadily declined. It's now somewhere between abysmal and the absolute pits.
