David Beckham: more tantrums than talent?

David BeckhamBy Laurie:

Ladies and gentlemen, meet David Beckham. The new face whatever of Armani underwear. (I’m a boxers fan myself, and this photo reminds me of why that is. Because…well…ick. Some things are just better left to the imagination.)

The most humorous part of this photo is that it has caused quite a stir in England, with one Daily Mail columnist saying it epitomizes the fact that "Greedy, vulgar, tacky Beckham is narcissism made flesh… an icon for an age in which fame and fortune is all.... As a sportsman, Beckham was always narcissistic, as famous for his hairstyles as his goals; more tantrums than talent."...

it’s frustrating for me to see him summed up this way. After a year of studying him, I’ve gotten the feeling he is, at heart, a decent person. That if he’d been pulled toward social awareness instead of materialism, he would have embraced it just as wholeheartedly. And there’s still a chance he may. He’s only 32.

But it is pretty humorous to seen him ripped apart by a British tabloid. Kind of like listening to Dr. Frankenstein carry on about what a horrible creature that monster is. Because what might Beckham be like if it not for the tabloids that created “Posh and Becks”?

But perhaps that’s a bit too deep for the Daily Mail.

Comments:
Bottom line: he's a hottie!

Meh. Too hairless for my taste. And too English. Juan Pablo Angel, on the other hand.....mmmmmm.

I'm with you Rose. Give me a hairy chest any day. Besides, he's too young.

I do appreciate the link, but in the future you might consider adding a little of your own personal insight rather than re-posting someone else's work verbatim.

Laurie,

I believe that extracting a paragraph or two from a larger article (which I did), giving the author proper credit (which I did), and linking to the original source (which I did) is proper blog etiquette.

I fashioned my blog on Salon's blog page, where they do exactly that: pasting an extract from other blogs with a link to the source, without any other commentary. I usually add no commentary of my own when an author was able to capture, in a few words, what I agree with. Several of the popular political blogs I visit, such as Atrios, for example, do that from time to time as well.

You were so witty and so spot-on I felt no need to add anything else. :)

In any case, I meant no disrespect posting as I did.

By the way, I found Offside just a few days ago and love it. Love the design, the column with the team and country names, and the articles on the left side. Very nice site.

You are forgiven. :-)

And welcome to the site, where I spend far too much of my time.

I thought I'd stop by one more time to apologize for jumping to conclusions.

Thing is, I get so many bot-generated links that simply take what I've written and use it to bring traffic to their site without even bothering to have an actual person read it, let alone get my name right. (A list of Christmas gifts for the France NT members got a link to a site selling Christmas gifts. That kind of thing, just to pull in traffic. An player injury post got a personal injury lawyer link.) I jumped to the conclusion that you were the same.

So again, my apologies.

For what it's worth, though, you're obviously literate, and writing original content is more fun. Just a thought.

Don't worry about a think Laurie. I appreciate your constructive comment and I will continue to visit Offside. And maybe I'll "borrow" some more of your stuff. :) Maybe next time you will approve of how I do it.

think=thing
