Examining Larry Craig's hypocrisy

GayBy Andrew Sullivan, talking about Republican Senator Larry Craig:

He grew up in a different time, and a different place, where even the possibility of being gay was inconceivable. I don't think he even thinks of himself as gay, or has any idea what being gay might actually mean. I think he thinks of his sexual orientation as a "lifestyle" (to use that hideous term Lauer kept referring to) that can be overcome the way one overcomes smoking or poor eating or sexual compulsion...

Craig was seeking in that toilet stall a connection, a shard of intimacy, that the world would not give him, or that he could not give himself. No one should have to live without that intimacy and dignity - no one...

It is just a tragedy that the party that Craig belongs to is committed to prolonging the pain and the denial of so many people - in order to appease the casual fears of the insecure, and to use those fears to sustain political power.

Comments:
While I agree with the author's sentiment, and absolutely take great glee every time some GOP cockroach gets caught in the light of Truth, I still have to protest that he is laying it on a bit thick when he uses "No one should have to live without that intimacy and dignity" to describe hitting on a stranger for a sordid blowjob over a stinking toilet.
I mean, let's stay rooted in reality, here! I really don't see a whole lot of dignity in that.
But then, I'm an old-fashioned kind of guy.

Good point, rreppy.

The author is a conservative gay man who has supported the Republican party and for the longest time supported Bush. So talk about hypocrisy...

Yeah, Sullivan is kinda thick at times. But I think he's referring to being gay, not referring to the act of cruising.

But I still don't think that wanting someone (male or female) to orally pleasure you makes you automatically gay, straight, or bi.

Larry Craig just likes blowjobs. Period.
