Church voted to reject black membership

Full story here:

The Rev. John Stevens says Fellowship Baptist Church in Saltillo voted not to approve blacks as members during a scheduled Sunday night business meeting Aug. 6. Because of the decision, Stevens stepped down from the Baptist Missionary Alliance congregation that has an average Sunday morning attendance of 30 people... Mike Dillard, who acted as spokesperson for the church, said the congregation "categorically denies" accusations that the church took such a vote and feels the charge is an attempt by a party to do them harm... After being told of the vote, Cliff Hardy, an officer with the Tupelo Police Department, left the church... "You see, my best friend is a black man," he said. "I wouldn't be comfortable going to a place where I couldn't ask my best friend to go to church with me... Since Stevens' resignation, one church member who was not at the Aug. 6 meeting has called the former pastor and told him he was in favor of what he did. Stevens estimates 80 percent of the church is against having blacks as members of the congregation."
Can anyone explain to me how is it possible to be a good Christian (not just claim to be one) and also be a racist? Is there a passage in the Bible that could somehow be interpreted that way? Or is this pastor lying about the vote?

Comments:
This is NOT Christianity.

This is some man, somehow becoming pastor (which I can't imagine how) and trying to project his misguided thinking to others. This is CRAZY! NOTHING is the bible condones racism.

THIS is what gives Christianity a bad wrap. This is why you study and follow the BIBLE, not what man thinks, says, or does!!!!

Stacy, I think you misread the article. The pastor resigned because he can't suport the congregation's vote to keep blacks out.

Some will say "Never Discuss Politics & Religion"; that's
fine for the uninformed!

Two Journalists were just released
from a Palestine capture, after they were converted to Islam...
at gun-point!

This is why I felt the need to display a History Post.

We can't really know if Rev Stevens is telling the truth or not about the so-called vote.

But, I'm sure if we spent some time at the church and interacted with the people, we'd be able to get an idea about how the group leans...towards segregation or not...

That would suck if he just made it up.

Snake Hunter, I read your history. Sir, with all due respect, you're just a warmonger. If you want to compare Iraq with W2, we are the equivelent of Germany (at least in terms of how it begin).

Lee, sounds odd that both a police officer and a pastor would both be lying. My money is on they are telling the truth.

I guess I did read it wrong.

Well, there are crazy "Christians" as well...just like there are suicide bomber muslims, there apparently is racist Christians. What can you do? Psychos everywhere.

The police officer was told of the vote. There's still no way to know if the vote actually happened.
