What's with all the stuff?

I've been obsessed with stuff of late, having recently moved in with my mom. Her home is full of stuff, and it's not even all hers! Much of the stuff was inherited from my grandfather, who had so much stuff, that even my grandma gave up during her lifetime and just let him have his own room. And despite being a stickler for tossing out stuff and avoiding junk, even my grandma left stuff after her demise.

So moving into my house has added a fairly small amount of stuff. And you'd think in a home with 4 bedrooms, two guest bedrooms, three living rooms, a two car garage, and an attic, we'd have space for all the stuff accumulated by 3 generations. Every time I've moved back in (yes, there's been more than one) I have done my part to get rid of my own junk. I admit, I have collected all sorts of bizarre stuff, and kept clothing that is unlikely to ever fit or ever be in style again. What can I say, I'm the hopeful type. But now I have a new joy, finding space. I threw a garage sale last weekend, collected a yard-sized garbage bag full of old clothes, and tossed or given away several other items.

But it's not enough! And it's making me mad when I realize how held back our society is when it comes to stuff. We have stuff in our cars, stuff in our homes, we go shopping at stores who only sell one type of item, the storage type. A whole store of stuff to hold our stuff. When we're born, we're born with only the hair on our body, and when we die, we don't get to take much with us, save for the one outfit we're wearing, and what hair we have left. You can't take it with you! What's with all the stuff? I can hardly enjoy the stuff I have because I can hardly find it, or find space for it with all the other stuff in this house! There must be an end to all this stuff and I intend to find it.

Comments:
One of the shows that scares me is Clean Sweep on TLC. These people have sooooo much stuff that half of them are on the verge of divorce!! I am an ANTI-STUFF person. My parents hoard stuff and I've resolved to NEVER be like them. My husband and I like, clean lines, no trinkets and no "collections". I mean, you gotta draw the line somewhere.

I totally agree. If its not around for decor, sentiment, or function...OR if I haven't thought about it in two years...ITS OUT. I HATE STUFF.
