Tough cookies

I don't know about you, but the plight of young girls (and boys) who have a parent in prison is something I never really thought much about, but I can only imagine how difficult it must be.
Most Girl Scouts earn their badges by crafting tchotchkes and taking hikes. But the girls of Troop 1500, in Austin, Texas, face the kinds of challenges most Scouts could hardly imagine: They all have mothers in prison... the girls of Troop 1500 are unseen victims of America's prison boom. Statistics estimate that 2.4 million children now have a parent behind bars; women are being incarcerated at higher rates than ever before, and eight out of 10 female prisoners are mothers. Damaged by loss and born into crime, children with a parent in prison are six times more likely to land in the juvenile justice system themselves.
Should there be some leniency for mothers who commit crimes if they have young children at home? Would that entice criminally inclined women to have unwanted children? Should something else be done? I don't really have any answers. It's just sad to think what these children must go through.

Comments:
PLEASE!! They are criminals and they are mothers, but they are most definitely CRIMINALS and they tore up their MOM card a long time ago when they decided to partipate in whatever activities got them in jail in the first place. They NEED to pay their dues to society to the fullest extent of the law. To provide lenienccy would allow for more and more lawless behavior.

Yes, the children are innocent bystanders to their parents' reckless behavior, but the parents shouldn't get off easy because they procreated.

I think this girl scout troop is awesome. I'm glad to see someone observed the need and created this wonderful support group. I'm sure they have a much better chance at becoming productive citizens because of it.
