Making the Step from Friend to GIRLFRIEND

Drew, 21
Pennsylvania
Asks:

How should I ask out a girl I've known for a long time?

Lee's Thoughts:

Drew,

I have a question for you. Have you gone out with her in the group situation yet? Group of friends going to a carnival, going to a movie, the beach, pickup flag football game, cookout?

Orrr....do you know her in one situation, possibly work or school and never gone out socially?

IF, you've never gone out at all, I am a big fan of the group thing to start off with. It is a great transition to the private date (which is a little more scary). You can really get to know a person that way, without all the pressure of one-on-one conversation. It's an easy invitation too...
"Hey, we're all doing XYZ tonight. Do you want to join us?" It makes her feel included. It shows you are interested and would like her to come, but again, its a lot less pressure then, "Let's go to Antonios for a candle-lit spaghetti dinner and suck both ends of the noodle until our lips meet like the Lady and the Tramp." (You're 21. You've seen that movie right?)

If you've already done the group thing, you definitely need to make the step to the one-on-one date. Again, it doesn't have to be anything extra romantic...pizza and beer work for me... :) It's just the fact that you make it known that you want to spend time with her, anywhere doing anything.... If you are in college, there are tons of fun, laid-back activities around campus. What about going for a hike? Take her to a funky restaurant to listen to live music. Go to a drag show (VERY FUN). In my opinion, the more silly, the better. It makes you stand out from all the shmoes that took her to Antonios.

In any case, make sure you are *doing* something, so you will be able to be *doing* whatever it (watching the show, painting your pottery, dancing the jig) is in the case you (GASP) run out of things to talk about.

Let me know how it goes!!!
Good Luck!!
