Heartbroken
Alana, 13
United States
Asks:
My boyfriend and I were together for 4 months and he broke up with me today. I am heartbroken and I can't stop crying. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have to see him every day at school. It was so hard not to cry at school today! I need help!!!!
Lee's Thoughts:
Alana,
I’m so sorry for your sadness. I’ve been there. We all have…and it SUCKS.
This may be really hard to understand, but I promise you, all of the emotion and pain you are feeling is an incredibly significant evolution of your life.
You MUST go through this. Honestly, you should actually enjoy it. This is GROWTH. This is the pain that will turn into exquisite beauty when you find your true love. There is an awesome song by Rascal Flatts called ‘The Broken Road’. It makes me cry every time because it is sooooo true.
"Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you"
This guy and this relationship are both lessons. They are stepping stones towards real happiness. They will teach you what you want out of a boyfriend and what you want out of life. Take out a piece of paper and make a list of everything you loved about him. Make a list about everything you didn’t like so much about him. USE this guy and this experience to MOVE FORWARD. Meditate about how this relationship made you a stronger, better person. You had a lovely four months, but now is the time for bigger and better things. This is not the end of your life, even if it feels like it.
Try to handle it with grace, especially at school. At home, you can cry into your pillow for hours. At school, walk with your shoulders back and head up. Hold onto the happy memories and realize that this guy’s biggest flaw is that he chose not to be with YOU.
His loss.
