What Makes Music Good?

When someone mentions "music", I'm sure that people have different thoughts. I'm sure some people think of rock, with heavy guitars and booming drums. Others may think of a rap-style bass line. Others may think along an instrumental/classic line.

Others may not focus on the "sound" of the music at all. Some may focus on the message behind it. Some may focus on the lyrics.

All in all... what do you think makes music "good"? Is it the way the instruments come together, and the overall sound? Do the instruments have to be played at a superb level? (Take guitars, for example. Does faster playing really mean better?) Do the lyrics make the music? Is it all about the message within?

For me, the overall sound really makes the music what it is. A lot of the bands I listen to have lyrics that are hard to understand (a lot of the singers are from Finland or Norway), but I listen to them because of the instrumental goodness.

I am also a huge fan of movie scores. These have no lyrics at all, having been designed to go behind dialogue and action.

Another band I listen to is one from Germany - Rammstein. Now this band doesn't sing in english at ALL. Every one of their songs is in German (well, they made one in English, and it is by far their worst song). So I can't understand most of it, and the music itself is fairly simple. Yet it all comes together to produce music that I happen to enjoy.

So what makes it good? Let's hear it!

Comments:
Music is sound first of all,its impact on yourself or other people is different of course.I can try to explain why even though its not easy: first of all some of us have a certain talent towards music and many of us don`t have any, and can`t really understand music. The only things that untalented people can understand is beat and lyrics. So songs with a good beat are always popular or songs with interesting lyrics(by that I don`t mean smart lyrics but lyrics that draw attention....more dirty the better)
So "good music" music that got a certain message, its powerfull and sensible and built on a solid structure (people who write music should know more than 3 chords....somebody please tell that to bob dylan!!)
But musicians....are mostly entertainers, nobody write anymore for the sake of music, just to make their songs popular, when a songwriter start up on a song the first thought would be "what should I do to make it a total hit?" This is the moment when all the music goes down and down and more down.....just think of classical music, the complexity of beethovens music was extreme, and got even better for few hundred years....than the beatles came....and they surely found out a way to make stupid music popular. Jhon Lennon was playing the first 5 years of his amazing carrier with only 5 strings on his guitar, not because he reinvented guitar playing but he just didn`t know that 6 are required... amazing....!!!!
I can go on and on but what I really want to say is that music dissapeared where entertainment took over, not really dissapeared, we still have a lot of good music nowadays but its too little compared to the huge amount of crap we got on the music charts every day....
